In reality, though, it's a pretty big part of my life ~ at least this election has been. Shawn's very involved in the Obama campaign and I've been doing my part as much as possible, too. I've hosted a meeting at my house, donated homemade cookies (that's big, people ~ I love my homemade cookies!), and given up time with my husband and son so they could go canvasing. Shawn's taken lunch to the campaign office and if we had an extra bedroom, we'd likely be offering to host people in town to work at the convention coming up at the end of the month. We both signed up to volunteer at the convention but apparently signed up too early, before the kinks got worked out of the data base system and now they have more than enough volunteers. But with Shawn's work on the campaign, he will earn us tickets to see Obama speak at the end of the convention and that's very exciting!
Shawn's also going to be helping run our neighborhood committees and I'll do my part with that as well ~ as long as it doesn't involve sitting or walking outside in 100+ degree weather. I am not quite that dedicated in my current state.
We've loved Obama from the beginning ... have believed in him and what he stands for. We've educated ourselves on his policies and his background. I think he's more likely to do things that I would do if I were president ~ more likely to represent my voice. We feel like he's the best choice for our next president and that voting this November is not only a right but a duty because our future and our children's future could be very much affected by the next White House occupant.
We've been seeing a lot of nasty campaign ads coming from the McCain camp and only last night saw one from Obama standing up for himself... My guess is that he's trying to take the high road. But Shawn's feeling frustrated because sometimes people actually buy into some of the crap, the mud slung, and it can affect their vote.
One that we've seen, and you probably have too, is the "Obama is too big of a celebrity to lead our country" one, where you see flashes of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton. The whole thing is just silly and I won't get into why I think that, but last night Shawn showed me a video that Paris made. Seems like she didn't appreciate being brought into this mess and though my personal opinion of her isn't very high (sorry, Paris), I loved the video she made. If you haven't already seen it, do yourself a favor and click here. You'll get a giggle out of it, no matter what side of the spectrum you fall politically.
And with that, we'll go back to our regularly scheduled programming of my kids, my hippiness and my surrogacy.

Have you seen Paris Hilton's response to McCain's ad that mentions her? Hilarious. Instead of calling myself a Yellow Dog Democrat, I might have to say I'm a Paris Hilton Democrat.
(And if you don't know what a YDD is, holler. It's a Southern thing.)
i totally want Shawn to write a guest post for MOMocrats. will you ask him!?
It's hard to discuss politics with folks I agree. Looks like the lesser of two evils to me.
Obama is less popular in the Chicago/NW Indiana area where he currently lives and serves. (although my husband is voting for him) Except of course by the black population, who love him for the wrong reason.
I'm sure it will all ebb and tide appropriately.
I am with you all the way. Liberal is the way to go, and thank goodness I live ina city that right now is behind Obama ina loud way.
If people aren't too frightened of REAL change for this country, Obama will win this thing. It might just happen. And, it might just happen simply because his running mate is an utter fool.
Oops! I meant his opponent, not his mate...yeah, it has been a long day sister and this HEAT is frying my brain!
Did you know that response by Paris Hilton made the news over here? Pretty funny - and clever. Love her middle of the road message. The most sensical thing she's ever said?
Yep, Paris has redeemed herself, in my book.
I love your big, liberal heart. And I totally feel ya.
I hate political ads. I'm sick of the polarizing. I wish we could all just get along. We need leadership in the country, no more pandering to the lobbyists and the loudest minority groups. We need someone speaking FOR THE PEOPLE. (can I get an amen, people?)
but din't paris (or was it brittany) do a commercial with mcCain years ago? arg
yes, all the negative stuff drives me insane. i'm really proud of Obama for not taking that road.
for the first time ever, i just put a politicians name on my car: Obama '08. magnet came in the mail today. :)
and I'm jealous you'll be at the convention, and proud of you for all your work. thanks!
Found you through eco-women - if you're the Compost warrior, we have a lot in common! I baked cookies this afternoon and I'm a strong liberal, too. Do those things go with compost bins in the backyard? :)
